The miniatures on this one are huge (one of the pictures has a regular miniature from another game for size comparison) and detailed. All factions have multiple strategies open to them.The game is in excellent shape with no wear, all pieces intact, and the Independent Old Ones still sealed in their plastic. Each faction has a unique set of monsters, spell books, and special abilities, and has different requirements to acquire its spell books. The first player to 30 is the lone victor *if* he has unlocked all six of spell books.Driving the strategy are a player's wish to expand his power base, and his need to accomplish six tasks to acquire his faction's spell books.
Victory is determined by accumulating points on the Doom Track. When all players run out of Power, the Action phase ends and the next turn begins.

At the start of a turn, players Gather Power, then, during a series of Action Rounds, they spend this Power to accomplish various tasks, such as recruiting Cultists, moving units, engaging in battle, summoning monsters, building Gates, casting spells, and Awakening their Great Old One. Each player takes the part of one of four factions included in the base game. The game is physically large, and includes sixty-four figurines of the cultists, monsters, aliens, and Great Old Ones that range in height from approximately 20 mm to nearly 180 mm.The game takes place on a map of Earth.
They each also bring their own Discovery cards for players to explore, and the monsters’ behaviors and abilities are tailored to each unique story.Cthulhu Wars is a strategy boardgame in which the players take the part of alien races and gods taken from the Cthulhu mythos created by H. Each Episode not only indicates the map setup using the various tiles in the game, but also new actions the investigators can perform in order to accomplish the tasks required to disrupt that episode’s ritual. Only instead of hopping around the world, Investigators face madness and monsters in discrete “episodes.” The game feels like a less exploration focused iteration on some of the concepts in FFG’s Eldritch Horror. He’s no stranger to horror/Mythos elements, so it’ll be interesting to see how this one is different. That last paragraph right there should be enough to draw you in, even if you’re not really a fan of the Cthulhu Mythos, which is a phrase I don’t understand. Which, coincidentally is the name of the new game from CMON on Kickstarter. The stars are right, eldritch horrors from beyond the stars, or just, y’know from sunken R’lyeh, where with passing aeons strange or otherwise (and really, look around at 2018, do aeons get much stranger than this one?) even death may die. And, predictably, this massive mini is a Kickstarter Exclusive, so back this new game of eldritch horror and cult rituals while the backing is good. Seriously, this miniature puts the great in Great Cthulhu.
